- City of Jacksonville · historic district review

Riverside and Avondale are historic districts, and that changes the job before a post goes in the ground. Anything street-facing goes through design review, which looks at picket profile, height, spacing and material — not just whether you are allowed a fence.
In practice that means matching what is already there. We photograph the neighbouring originals, identify the profile and rail configuration, and where nothing off the shelf is close enough we have had pickets milled to match. It is a slower start and it is the difference between an approval and a resubmission.
Physically, these are 1910s to 1920s lots with brick sidewalks, granite kerbs and enormous live oaks whose roots run under everything. Access is often through a single-width driveway with no rear entry, so material gets carried rather than driven in, and we allow for that on the schedule instead of discovering it on the morning.
Design review before install
Street-facing fences go through historic review. We photograph and match the neighbouring profile and prepare the submission, which is what turns a resubmission into an approval.
