Wood is still what most of Jacksonville puts up, and for good reason — it is the warmest looking fence you can buy, it gives you full privacy at six feet, and when a limb comes through it you replace a panel rather than a section. The difference between a wood fence that lasts eighteen years and one that leans in five has almost nothing to do with the pickets you can see and everything to do with the posts you cannot.
We set ground-contact rated posts, not the utility-grade lumber sold for above-ground use, thirty inches deep in a belled concrete collar. In Jacksonville's sand that depth and that shape are what stop a post walking; a twenty-four inch straight-sided hole is fine in Georgia clay and is why so many local fences lean by year three.
Board-on-board is what we recommend over a flat privacy panel. Timber shrinks across the grain as it dries, and a butted panel that looks solid in March has daylight through it by September. Overlapping the boards means the run stays private no matter how much the wood moves, and it takes wind better because the overlap flexes.

UC4A-rated 4x4 or 4x6, set thirty inches deep in a belled concrete collar.
Posts eight feet on centre
Two extra posts per hundred feet compared with the usual ten-foot spacing. It is what keeps the run up in a storm.
Board-on-board or shadowbox
Overlapped boards so the fence stays private as the timber shrinks. Flat privacy available if you want it.
Hot-dip galvanised ring-shank nails
Smooth nails back themselves out in Florida humidity. Ring-shank stays put and does not bleed rust.
Gates built on site
Measured to the cured opening, three hinges as standard, latch height set for you.
Tear-out and haul-away
Old fence gone the same morning, nails swept with a rolling magnet, debris off site.

Posts, then cure
Tear-out and augering on day one. Posts go in plumb on a string line and are left overnight — nothing hangs on green concrete.
Rails, pickets, walk-through
Day two is framing and pickets to a chalk line, then we walk it with you and adjust the gates before we leave.
Questions we get on this one
Cedar or pressure-treated pine?
Pine is cheaper and takes stain well; cedar is naturally rot and insect resistant, moves less and holds colour longer. On a six-foot privacy run the material difference is usually 25–35 percent. Both get the same posts and the same hardware from us — we do not build the cheap version differently.
Should I stain it, and when?
Yes, and not immediately. Let a new fence weather three to six months so the mill glaze and treatment moisture are gone, then seal it. After that, every three to four years in this climate. A sealed fence in Jacksonville will comfortably beat an unsealed one by five years.
Which side gets the good side?
Board-on-board and shadowbox look the same from both sides, which is one of the reasons we push them — no argument with the neighbour and nothing in your HOA covenant to trip over. On a flat privacy panel, convention here is that the finished side faces out.
